Challenge

This large and successful marketing arm of a big tech company in Silicon Valley had concerns that their leaders’ communication skills were hurting their bottom line.

​Senior leaders complained that it took too much time to pitch ideas and share updates, and clients were reluctant to schedule time with the sales team (complaining it took them too long to get to the point).

Messages out of the department lacked a story and weren’t memorable. They wanted their leaders to be more like consultants to their senior leadership and clients.

Approach

  • We conducted a survey and determined teams needed support in six key areas.

  • We co-created a six-module approach that started with creating more meaningful dialogues, and culminated in a presentation to senior leaders on a change they wanted to see within the company. Modules 1&2 were built around dialogue. Modules 3&4 focused on influence and storytelling. Modules 5&6 gave participants the chance to pull together their learning and craft a powerful narrative around a change they wanted to see within the company. Participants created videos to be viewed by senior leadership to focus on key skill sets to add to their consultative approach.

  • Workshops were combined with 1:1 coaching, a follow-up case study and interviews

Results

  • 80% of participating leaders were promoted within one year of completing the program

  • Leaders of participants were surveyed three weeks after completing the program, and 100% reported more effective communication - including more succinct and powerful messaging, better presentations, and better listening

  • Participants reported more effective meetings - both shorter in duration and more pointed in their outcomes

  • Leaders became more consultative, and reported shorter and more impactful conversations

  • Participants reported that the program was “the best learning they’ve ever had,” because it has made them more capable of getting things done - giving them more power and influence and making them feel seen
