An Axe & Arrow Proposal Prepared For:

America Perez, Director of Legal Training & Development

Presenting Needs:

Simpson Thatcher is seeking custom leadership training for 120+ mid-level Associates.  Success is an engaging and practical training experience that addresses the unique challenges and needs of the law firm environment.

Presenting Needs:
  1. The firm is seeking a one-day foundational program, as well as potential follow-up modular sessions to build on the initial training
  2. The program should cover leadership communication basics such as; expectation setting, the modes of delegation, feedback, situational leadership, and influencing up/down
  3. The one-day program should be a co-creation, incorporating both external expert facilitation as well as firm-specific content and speakers to make it relevant to the Associates

Special Considerations:
  1. Time is a billable hour, so any ongoing training modules need to be bite-sized (60-90min) in order to encourage attendance and fit the culture at the firm
  2. Content will need to highlight research and use evidence-based models to create participant buy-in
  3. Special attention should be paid to understanding the unique culture of this law firm, its stressors and promotion process
  4. The central staffing model means management of team members rotates, and individual interest in leadership skills will rely on an intrinsic motivation to lead

Success
Indicators

Picture
  • Participants will learn the Simpson Thatcher Leadership Foundation Model and understand the behaviors needed to both manage and lead at this firm

  • Participants will understand how tapping into their values will drive them towards more effective leadership behaviors

  • Associates will know what behaviors they need to leverage and shift to lead more effectively

  • Leaders will have increased confidence in their ability to have core management conversations around delegating effectively, giving feedback, listening & Asking questions, managing up, and adjusting leadership to meet the needs of their audience (situational leadership)

  • Associates will feel more connected to their leaders and their colleagues, building meaningful bonds with other Associates through personal stories and values sharing

  • Individuals will leave feeling motivated to invest more time in their own development, demonstrated through their sign-up for ongoing modules

Our Recommended
Approach

Axe & Arrow suggests a three phase approach for equipping Associates with sustainable tools to support their management/leadership journey.

1

PHASE I: CO-CREATION
150 ASSOCIATES

Goals for Co-Creation phase:
  1. Engage Associates with program themes and gauge interest in key leadership topics
  2. Gather core self survey & assessment data to be used throughout the series
  3. Ensure all modules are tailored to meet the unique needs of both the firm and the participants

Prior to program kick-off, Associates will be invited to complete a self-survey on program themes.
  • Survey (Average of twelve minutes to complete): This survey introduces Associates to the themes of the program (Management/Leadership). Associates will self-rate their skills in various leadership competencies as well as rank their interests in various management/leadership topics.  Results of this survey will be shared with client in advance of program launch.  This data, along with data collected at the close of Phase II, will determine what additional modules you would want to launch in Phase III.
  • Co-Creation: Survey Reponses will inform the dialogues between the Simpson Thatcher development team and Axe & Arrow CEO, Ingrid Wiese.  Together, these parties will co-create a final agenda for the event.

2

PHASE II:  THE FOUNDATIONS OF LEADERSHIP EVENT
LIVE IN-PERSON DELIVERY  |  1 DAY  |  150 PARTICIPANTS
Co-created event content, 4 coaches & four breakout rooms of 35 participants

Specific Goals for this experience include:
  1. Introduce Associates to the STB Leadership Foundations
  2. Engage leaders in their ongoing leadership journey
  3. Learn valuable tools for conducting key management/leadership conversations

Sample agenda below.  All agenda items will be co-created and designed with the STB development team.

3

PHASE III: LEADERSHIP LABS
VIRTUAL LIVE  |  90 MIN  |  20 PARTICIPANT MAX
(12) Total Deliveries/Four Deliveries of Each Module

The LEADERSHIP CONVERSATIONS portion of the program focuses on learning how to develop direct reports through key conversations.  This curated collection of leadership workshops has been carefully designed with three core learning goals:
  1. Elevate mindset from associate to manager/leader
  2. Enable leadership with essential skills for communicating more effectively and intentionally with direct reports
  3. Inspire leaders to amplify their impact across the firm
Modules to be determined after Phase II survey collection.  Each module would be 60-90 minutes in length, and can be delivered virtually or in-person.  Maximum of 20 participants per session.
  1. The Delegation Conversation
  2. The Resistance Conversation
  3. The Empathetic Conversation
PRE-WORK
  • Every session involves a pre-work question to complete in advance of session arrival
MODULE 1
90 minutes
The Delegation Conversation
  • Confront your own preferences for delegation
  • Learn six ways to delegate along the scale of transactional to relational
  • Practice adjusting your delegation style with a case study card game
MODULE 2

  • Apply the S.A.L.S.A. dialogue model to shift mindset, ask questions that go below the surface, listen for what matters, summarize back similarities and differences and respectfully assert your POV when facing resistance
  • Practice asserting effectively and collaborate on your own resistance scenarios
MODULE 3
90 minutes
The Empathetic Conversation
  • Share your own experiences with managing emotions in the workplace
  • Discuss the four quadrants of Daniel Goleman's EQ model
  • Prepare an "If, then" strategy for your next potentially emotional conversation

“I was challenged to bring a performance management program to over 300 globally dispersed managers. Our managers were effective at leading for technical results but needed to accelerate their transformation as people leaders.

Axe & Arrow hit the right note across a diverse level of needs. They used surveys, interviews and a pilot to create a highly engaging, rapid, applied learning program to meet our leaders where they most needed help. This enabled them to apply their new skills immediately back on the job.

Over the course of one year, Axe & Arrow elevated the quality of four key performance conversations with 300 of our managers across the globe. Now our leaders are having more frequent and meaningful performance and career conversations and are receiving higher engagement ratings from our employees.

Axe & Arrow Coaching has produced lasting results for my organization. They continually provide fresh ideas in the most current leadership practices. They also vastly increased the confidence of our managers and helped us scale our programs quickly. If you are looking for a world-class learning partner that takes time to understand your needs then you have found them."

Ingrid and her team have been amazing to work with.  They are experts and great partners in developing leadership training for our team.  I lost count as to how many participants have said the training they delivered was the best they have ever taken.  My organization identified a need to build strong leaders.  We worked with Ingrid to develop a Compelling Leader program to address areas such as influencing, compelling conversations, and executive presence, but she brought additional areas to consider which were very complimentary to the original format.  Despite participants having to get out of their comfort zone, they were completely engaged, embraced the learnings, and had fun during the training.  I have nothing but high regards for Ingrid and her team!
